Health Benefits Of A2 Milk-Based Ghee

Health Benefits Of A2 Milk-Based Ghee

‘A2 cow ghee’ is often promoted as a healthier choice than regular ghee. But when you look at the research, the picture is not that simple. Many of the claims around A2 are based on studies of A2 milk, not on what is marketed as A2 ghee. Direct research on A2 milk based ghee is still limited.

What Does A2 Mean in Ghee?

A2 refers to a type of beta-casein protein found in cow's milk. Ghee is mainly milk fat, with very little milk protein remaining after the clarification process.

FSSAI standards require ghee to contain at least 99.5% milk fat and no more than 0.5% moisture. FSSAI also clarified in 2024 that A1 and A2 claims on milk-fat products such as ghee can be misleading because the A1/A2 distinction relates to beta-casein protein.

What Does Research Say About A2 Ghee Benefits?

Most research linked to A2 and digestive health has been conducted on A2 milk. Some clinical studies have found fewer digestive symptoms with A2 milk compared with conventional milk containing both A1 and A2 beta-casein.

However, these findings cannot be directly applied to A2 ghee. Ghee contains very little of the milk protein that A2 research focuses on, and there is limited direct research on the health benefits of A2 ghee.

So, claims that A2 ghee is easier to digest or offers special health benefits need to be treated carefully.

Is A2 Ghee Healthy?

A2 cow ghee can be included in a balanced diet, but the A2 label alone does not make it healthier than regular ghee.

Claims that A2 ghee helps with weight loss, lowers cholesterol, boosts immunity or prevents disease are not well established by direct research on A2 ghee. Ghee is also high in fat, so the amount consumed matters.

For consumers, the quality of the ghee and how much they consume are more useful things to consider than assuming that an A2 label automatically means greater health benefits.
